Pathiramanal is an enchanting island on the lake that can be accessed by boat. This 10 acre island on the backwaters is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. According to mythology a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water madeway for the land to rise from below. The island can be accessed only by boat.

Pathiramanal which literally translates as "midnight sand" is a little located in Muhamma Panchayat, Alappuzha district of Kerala. The island which is characterized by beautiful sceneries is as well a place where migratory birds from different parts of the world can be spotted.

A 28.505 ha sized island, Pathiramal is about thirteen kilometers away from Alappuzha. The distance from Kumrakom to the island is four kilometers towards the northwest. Geographically, it is 810m away from the nearest mainland.
From Pathramanal, you can see Muhamma on the Southwest and Kulakkozhi Chira on the northwest.

The Thanneermukkom bund is situated on the left side of Kulakkozhichira. Pathiramanal Boat Service

Surrounded by the Vembanad Lake, the only viable means of getting to Pathiramanal is by the waterways. You can board a motorboat or a speed boat to take you there. Some boats ply the Muhamma- Kumarakom water route, however, the boats from the Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWD) do not stop at Pathiramanal anymore.

If you wish to utilize the motorboat, it takes one and a half hours, but you can get there earlier using a speed boat as it takes thirty minutes. If you do not intend to extend your stay on the Island then you can employ a simple boat. From Kumarakom to Pathiramanal is proximately forty minutes.

Pathiramanal Island Entry Fee

The entry to Pathiramanal Island is free for adults, children, and even foreigners an entry fee is zero. The island is open all days of the week from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and you can enjoy island for a visiting duration of two to three hours.

The island is a plastic-free zone so visitors are not allowed to leave without clearing any wastes or dangerous goods brought during their visit. Being small-sized, the island can be covered by walking. There is also the talk about the Pathiramanal air possessing healing properties. Ninety-three species of birds, twenty-four diverse dragonflies, and thirty-four butterfly types were found based on a study conducted by the Environmental Sciences Department of MG University.

The Ezhilam Pala pulls tourists( who are mostly young lovers) in their hundreds to the island. Myths have it that the island came into existence from the depth of the Vembanad Lake to help Vilwamangalam conduct Sandhya bandana. However, history has something different to say about the island, it is said that the island was the property of Parayi Tharakan, it was he who according to history sold it to a Gujarathi trader known as Bheem Devji. Subsequently, the land was rebought from the M/s Bheemji Trust of Cochin by Chevalier CAM Anthraper. 

Upon the enactment of the Land Reforms Act, the government took control of the island. Subsequently, it was relinquished to the Department of Tourism.

Pathiramanal Bird Sanctuary

Pathiramanal-Lake, Beach and Water

The island which is on the Alappuzha backwaters is located in the Vembanad lakes and it stretches to Kochi and the Kayamkulam Lake. Exploring Vembanad lake is interesting to do. The lake doubles as the longest of all lakes in India and the largest in Kerala and has an area of 2033 square kilometers. The Vembanad lake which lies at sea level is a source of freshwater for the state.

Kayal which has an outlet to the Arabian sea is between Panmana and Karthikapaly is connected to Vembanad. The Kayamkulam Lake is a shallow water lagoon where you can indulge in the boat races. Crab species that can also be found in the Kayal include; Scylla Serrata and the Portunus pelagicus.
