The Legend of Meenakshi in Madurai Meenakshi Temple

In Hindu mythology, there is a story behind the legend of Meenakshi. Meenakshi is said to be the reincarnation of Goddess Parvati.

Malayadhvaja, the Pandya king, and his consort queen Kanchanamalai wished for a son who could be the heir of the kingdom. He performed a Yagna, the fire ceremony, as a worship to the Gods to fulfill his wishes. But instead of a son, a daughter was born to him who unusually had three breasts. He named his daughter Meenakshi but was worried about her. The Gods assured him that his problems will be solved if he raised her like a son to be a warrior and once she meets her true love, her third breast will vanish.

Malayadhvaja followed the instructions of the Gods and raised Meenakshi like a son and she turned out to be a great warrior, winning several battles. Once when she was on a battlefield, she was challenged by Lord Shiva. The moment she saw Him, her breasts disappeared. Destiny was finalized at that moment. Meenakshi and Lord Shiva were married, the marriage being presided over by Lord Vishnu. The couple stayed in Madurai and ruled the kingdom as king and queen. The wedding ceremony is celebrated even today as ‘Chithirai Thiruvizha’.

The History behind the Madurai Meenakshi temple

The initial structure of the Madurai Meenakshi temple was constructed in the 7th century C.E. The temple was further renovated and re-constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries under the flagship of the Nayak dynasty. The complex was further increased and the streets around the temple were redesigned, keeping in mind the principal and traditional architectural designs of Vastu Shastra.

The Intricate Architecture of the temple

Madurai Meenakshi temple follows the Dravidian style of architecture, prevalent in the southern part of India. The main essence of the style is the towers, covered porches, halls with pillars, and water reservoirs.

Lord Shiva is known here as Sundareshwara in the colloquial language, the meaning being beautiful Lord. There are two principal sanctuaries in the temple, right in the middle of the entire complex. One is dedicated to Meenakshi and the other to Sundareshwara. Each sanctuary has a gold finial cap. There is a Mandapa in front of the sanctuaries, which provides the path to the Garbagriha.

Gopuram of Madurai Meenakshi Temple

Before entering the sanctuaries, the devotees believe it is holy to dip into the holy waters of the Golden Lily tank. You can find the tank on the southern side of the temple complex. The tank is believed to be the place where a golden water lily bloomed for the puja conducted by Lord Indra. At the northeast corner of the complex, you can see the Mandapa and the Hall of Thousand pillars.

The Hall of Thousand Pillars

The Hall of thousand pillars is one of the most impressive and significant parts of the Madurai Meenakshi temple. Though the name is thousand, in reality, there are 985 pillars. The structure is a brilliant piece of architecture, carved out of a single rock. The hall is also known as Aayiram Kaal Mandapam.

You will find huge statues of Nataraja and Sivakama inside the hall, the largest in the temple. Images of gods, demons, and animals of the celestial world are carved on the stone pillars, portraying an artistic charm. In the yesteryears, the hall was used mainly for musical shows, religious dances, or for the king to address the people.

Nowadays, the hall has been converted into a museum for visitors to witness several artifacts like bronze sculptures, various paintings, and objects depicting the history of the temple, antique coins, rare photographs, several idols, and exhibits belonging to the Shaiva and Vaishnava religions.

Ashta Shakti Mandapam

One of the most enchanting parts of the Madurai Meenakshi temple is the Ashta Shakti Mandapam. The hall essentially served the purpose of offering food to the devotees who came for worship. It was established by the wives of Thirumalai Nayakar. The pillars and walls of the Mandapam comprise images and sculptures from the tales of the lives of Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi

The Gopuras

The huge towers of the Madurai Meenakshi temple are known as the Gopuras. They serve as the entry gates for the temple and are ornate with elegant architecture. The temple has fourteen Gopuras at each of the cardinal directions. The interesting part of the Gopuras is the height of one tower exceeds the other ahead of it, the reason being the towers were added by the succession of rulers to show off their power and devotion.

The tallest of the towers is almost 170 feet tall. It contains more than 1500 figures, renovated and repaired after every twelve years.

Festivals at the Madurai Meenakshi temple

Many festivals are held in the temple almost throughout the year. The major among them is the Chithirai Thiruvizha or Thirukalyanam festival, held in April every year. The festival attracts millions of devotees and visitors during the festival. It essentially celebrates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi. It is an opportunity to witness the tradition, history, and cuisine of the Tamilian culture.

The other prominent festivals held at the Madurai Meenakshi temple are the Vasantham festival, Unjal festival, Mulai-Kottu festival, Arudhra Dharsan Festival, and Thai Utsavam. Besides, there is the Navratri festival where you will love to watch the Gollu or the colorful dolls displayed in the temple. All the festivals are celebrated with much zeal and enjoyment.

Evening ceremony or the Palliarai Puja

The last puja at the temple is held every day at 9:15 pm and is called the Palliarai Puja. The idol of Lord Shiva is placed on a palanquin and carried around the temple in rounds followed by the Thakil and Nadaswaram musical instruments played in harmony. The idol is placed near the shrine of Goddess Meenakshi and the puja rituals are performed.

Palliarai Puja

The idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi are placed in a swing to celebrate the divine bonding between them.

Madurai Meenakshi temple- Timings

For Hindus, the charges for the darshan are free and others can opt for free darshan or INR 50 per person for a special darshan.

What is the best time to visit the temple?

The temple can be visited at any time of the year. But it is recommended to visit the temple when the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Yet the best time to visit the temple is between October and March when the weather is at its best. The months of July and August are also pleasant due to the monsoons and can be opted for a trip to the temple. The colonel who lived there and is the famous person the island is named after, John Munroe, did all of his years of administrative work at the Bungalow. The home, which is more than 200 years old, has been transformed into a sort of museum.

Maharaja Balaram Varma of Travancore died in 1810. He was succeeded by Gowri Lakshmi Bai, the daughter of his adopted sister. She, not being a blood relative, had to face several conspirators including her own deewan Ummini Thampi who had begun to act independently on occasions at the time. Being alerted by all this unrest, within a year of coming to power, the Rani one day sacked Thampi and appointed the British resident Col John Munroe as her new deewan.

This was a political masterstroke from a newborn child. Munroe managed to ward off the conspirators due to his support from the East India Company and also managed to balance the treasury for years, thus being able to come up with a fitting profit for the company. It was a win-win situation for everyone and everyone was happy. So this was how Col. Munroe became an important part of the history of Kollam and Kerala.

The front veranda of the colonial-style house is very large and is a sight for sore eyes. There are pictures of John Munroe, his family, and his ancestors that you can find inside. The Indian-style toilet seat with the glass cover is the bungalow’s primary attraction. It is thought to have been transported from Europe specifically for John Munroe. The locals claim it may be one of the first toilets in India. Today, the bungalow has been transformed into a rehabilitation facility.

If you’re fortunate, you might also come across locals working on coir.

5. Watch Sunrise at Ashtamudi Lake and Sunset at Perumon Railway Bridge

There’s nothing like grabbing an early morning boat to the Ashtamudhi lake and enjoying the cool weather, as the sun goes up slowly behind the green. It is truly a blissful and surreal experience that is a must when visiting this island. As is watching the sunset from the Perumon.

Railway bridge, where the sun sets slowly into the Keralan backwaters. In the year 1988, a significant railway accident occurred here. At a ledge next to the bridge, there is a monument for the victims. In reality, there are now two rail bridges, one for approaching trains and the other for departing ones. Additionally, there is a ferry terminal nearby from which big government ships transport vehicles and passengers to the opposite side of the island. Overall, it is a great destination to travel to.

Sunrise at Ashtamudi Lake

Ashtamudi Lake is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. Its wetland ecosystem is unique. It also has an interesting shape of a large palm-shaped (also sometimes described as octopus-shaped) water body. In the local Malayalam language, ‘Ashtamudi’ means ‘eight braids’. You will find coconut groves and palm trees along both the banks of the lake and also along its backwaters. There are also small towns and villages interspersed between these vast expanses of trees.

The major river discharging into the lake is the Kallada river. It also forms Kerala’s deepest estuary and gives its origin to the Ashtamudi lake.

6. Embrace the Island’s Rich History by Paying a Visit to the 1878 Dutch Church

There’s an isolated 1878 built Dutch church located on this island, which has been closed down. However, the architecture still stands intact, bearing the very colonial style details of the Dutch. There are great photography locations here, especially an old boating dock which is also a great sunset point.

Dutch Church
Dutch Church

The church is remote, and not many people go there. In actuality, there is no easy way to reach the Dutch church. To get to the church, you’ll need to park your car on the main road, walk across some fields, and over a railroad track. The church’s colonial-style building is still standing today. The church does not have weekly services.

7. Try Out a Unique Munroe Mocktail

Nothing screams Kerala, more than a solo walk or cycle around the island under the afternoon sun and a cool glass of Munroe mocktail. Soothe yourself with these unique concoctions that are not only a pleasure but a necessity under the warm tropical sun.

8. Taste the Fingerlicking Local Cuisine

If you’re planning a proper small staycation here, make sure you try out the local authentic cuisine at your homestay. Freshly caught and prepared fish, and authentic Keralan delicacies are something that you cannot miss out on when staying here. It is not surprising that Kollam is one of the best places to eat seafood because it is a coastal region with the famed backwaters of Kerala, a maze of waterways. As the Chinese fishing nets or fishing rods seize the delicacy to be presented in the most Keralan style imaginable, observe your unusual supper being freshly caught off the lake.

Local Cuisine

The traditional cuisines of Kerala include Appam, Stew, Fish Moilee, Chilli Garlic Prawns, and Fish in Shredded Coconut. All of these are made with fragrant indigenous spices that give the food its distinctive flavor. All sumptuous treats are cooked in coconut oil. Since ancient times, residents have used coconut for delectable culinary dishes since it is readily available and has a wealth of health advantages.

Among the top activities to do here, if you want to truly enjoy and immerse yourself in the local rural life, you should definitely go fishing in the Kallada River or the Ashtamudi lake. Book a canoe and get fishing. If you’re lucky, you can hook in tilapias, Murrells, pear spots, prawns, oysters, clams, crabs, green chromides, and more. The waters are a rich ecology packed with life, unlike the land above.

You will meet local fishermen who set their nets in these places. These areas have been found to provide sumptuous catches. The fishermen will be pleased to share their experience with you and make your time there more enjoyable.

fisherman dropping nets to catch fishes

There are various species of delicious fishes all around Kerala, most of which reap huge profits. You can get your hands on sardines, mackerels, pomfret, tunas and what not. Try out your luck because you are sure to catch something in these bountiful and rewarding backwaters.

10. Replenish Your Soul at the Palaruvi Waterfalls

The Palaruvi waterfalls is a 300 ft beauty nestled in a dense green forest. The cool breeze, the earthy scent in the wind, and the humming of the waterfalls will altogether elevate you and rejuvenate your soul. In fact, the locals claim that the waters have medicinal properties which it acquires while passing through farms and plantations. The rugged terrain one has to go through to get there might be challenging.

However, all forms of exhaustion vanishes the moment one sees these magnificent waterfalls. People who want to cool down in the cold water frequently visit it, and it frequently draws big crowds of people. The water’s purity at this place is indescribable. This waterfall is unique in that it is exceptionally clean. The time spent here with family and children is wonderful.

Palaruvi Waterfalls
Palaruvi Waterfalls

Following the 2018 flood, numerous rocks in the bathing area were relocated. As a result, taking a bath in the main falls is a little risky. Little falls and locations further downstream, however, are open and secure.

Sadly, this hidden Venice is slowly sinking. You’ll find plenty of abandoned villas that were/are underwater to some extent. The exact reason for this is unknown, however, it is assumed that the island will be completely under the water by 2050. For now, it is truly an obscure beauty and one must pay a visit if and when planning a trip to Kerala.

Kerala is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Since then it frequently rates highly in surveys and has, in the past, been named in the top ten of paradises in the world.

This is mainly due to beautiful beaches, the laid-back welcome that greets you every time, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and heritage sites. There is so much to see and do that planning your trip before arriving in Kerala is an excellent way to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.

How to create a list of Best Places to visit in Kerala with an itinerary?

The best place to start a trip to Kerala is Kochi and decide on accommodation. Do you want to stay in one place for the whole of your trip or would you rather move around and get the feel of the state in all its glory and diversity?

Setting out an itinerary of exactly what you want to see and where it is within Kerala will mean you can make the most of accommodation. For the places where you have lots that you want to see, an idea would be to book a hotel or guest house for a few nights.

Remember that you don`t want to be rushing around so frantically that you don`t fully take in the atmosphere. Visiting a place like Kerala is a once in a lifetime opportunity so you don`t want to spend most of it either stuck in a car or worrying about the timings of getting to places.

But do not worry if your itinerary is not completed before you arrive in India. One way to get the best out of a country, especially if you have never visited it before, is to use the local knowledge like tour operators based in Cochin. Employing a local tour operator in Kerala has huge advantages – they will know the best places to go when the best times to go are, plus they will have access to cheaper prices and possible discounts. The best way to plan a trip to Kerala at a reasonable cost is to use the services of Kerala based tour operator but book air tickets on your own.

Explore the best of nature by embarking on a journey through the best tourist places in Kerala with your loved ones.

Jatayu, in the Hindu epic, Ramayana, is the younger brother of Aruna and is a demi-god. He has the form of a vulture and is a dearest friend of Lord Rama’s father, Dhasharatha. In Ramayana, Jatayu tries to save Goddess Sita when he sees Ravana abducting her to Lanka. The personification of chivalry and valor, Jatayu risked his life to save Sita from the evil clutches of King Ravana.

After his wings being clipped off by Ravana, Jatayu laid down waiting for Lord Rama to inform that Ravana has gone south. With the pain of Jatayu dying to save Sita, Lord Rama blessed the bird and performed his last rites. From that day on, Jatayu has been an epitome of bravery and stands for the empowerment and protection of women.

Jatayu Rock, Pond and Rama Temple

Jatāyu according to the Rāmāyana was a bird who was the son of Garuda (Vishnu’s mythical bird), and king of the vultures; he is also attributed to being the son of Aruna. He was an ally of Rāma and fought Rāvana furiously to prevent him from abducting Sītā, but was overpowered and left mortally wounded

In the great epic Ramayana, Jatayu is characterized as a noble bird of divine origin. One day he happened to hear the plaintive cry of a lady. It was Sita lamenting for help while she was being abducted to Lanka by the demon king Ravana. Jatayu rushed to her rescue, stopped Ravana’s chariot named Pushpaka Vimana, and engaged in a battle with him. Eventually, Ravana took his powerful sword Chandrahasa, cut off the bird’s left-wing, and went away with Sita. It is said that the injured Jatayu and his lost wing landed on top of a rock.

In time, the rock got the name Jatayupara. This is where the monumental statue of Jatayu is now built in Kerala. There is a pond near the rock which is said to be formed by the stroke of Jatayu’s beak. It has water throughout the year and never goes dry.

Legend also says that Lord Rama later came to Jatayupara, and gave moksha or deliverance to the wounded and dying Jatayu. Jatayu narrated the entire story to Rama, delivering him vital information about his wife Sita. Here, there is a mark of footprint said to be that of Lord Rama. A temple dedicated to Lord Rama can be experienced in an adjacent compound.

The sculpture along with the adventure center and Siddha healing center, all of 65 acres, form Jatayu Earth Centre.

The Jatayu Earth Centre offers an assortment of rock-based adventure activities for thrill-seekers. Plan your trip to Kerala with us and enjoy your visit to Jatayu Park.
